Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 egg
- 1 cup apple butter
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it blooms, becoming foamy and fragrant.
- Combine dry ingredients: In a separate mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
- Mix the dough: Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out the dough: Turn it out onto a floured surface and roll into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the apple butter over the rolled dough, leaving a small border. Sprinkle ground cinnamon on top.
- Roll tightly from one end into a log shape, sealing the edges.
- Slice into 1-inch thick rolls and place them in a greased baking dish.
- Second rise: Cover the rolls and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
- Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Make the glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar and milk until smooth.
- Drizzle the glaze over warm rolls and serve fresh out of the oven.
Notes
Make-ahead tips: Prepare the dough the night before and refrigerate shaped rolls. Let sit at room temperature for an hour before baking.
