Description

Delight in the flavors of tender cake cradling sweet, spiced apples and a buttery streusel topping, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • For the streusel topping:
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your 9×13 inch pan by greasing it well or lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is well mixed before introducing the next.
  4. Stir in the sour cream, creating a harmonious blend of flavors.
  5. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt in a separate bowl.
  6. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing gently until just combined.
  7. Fold in the chopped apples and nuts if using.
  8. Pour half of the batter into the greased pan, smoothing it out evenly.
  9. Sprinkle half of the streusel topping over the batter.
  10. Add the remaining batter and top with the rest of the streusel.
  11. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  12. Allow the cake to cool in the pan before slicing into squares and serving warm.

Notes

For best results, use softened butter and do not overmix the batter. Allow the cake to cool before slicing.
